The Dimensions of Qur'anic Citation in the Political Discourse of Imam Khamenei

Abstract

Statement of the Problem: This article seeks to examine Imam Khamenei’s citation of Qur'anic verses in his political discourse and to elucidate the various dimensions of this practice. It does so by addressing several key questions: Why does His Eminence invoke Qur'anic verses in his political discourse? What objectives does he seek to achieve through these citations? What political implications and outcomes do they produce? From which political ideology do they originate, and for which political ideology do they lay the foundation? Through these questions, the study explores both the depth and the broader implications of Qur'anic citation in Imam Khamenei's political discourse.
Research Methodology: The study employs descriptive-analytical and inductive methods by systematically surveying and analyzing Imam Khamenei’s political speeches in order to identify the intellectual and political dimensions underlying his citation of Qur'anic verses.
Findings: The findings indicate that the citation of the Holy Qur'an in Imam Khamenei’s political discourse reflects a deeply rooted political vision derived from the Noble Book of Allah. This vision arises from a profound sense of responsibility and divine obligation before Allah Almighty and is founded upon the belief in the government of Imam al-Zamān (may Allah hasten his reappearance) and the inseparability of religion and politics. Furthermore, this approach seeks to establish a distinctly Qur'anic political methodology, consolidate the foundations of the Islamic Republic and the Islamic Revolution, and deepen the political methodology of those statesmen and political leaders who follow his approach.
