Abstract
Objective:
Childhood constitutes the foundational stage in the formation of human personality and education, during which cognitive, physical, social, and emotional capacities are developed. Playing is considered one of the most important means contributing to this holistic development, as it is an innate activity naturally practiced by children and plays a significant role in education and learning. Although contemporary educational and psychological studies emphasize the importance of play in fostering children’s abilities, its value-based and educational dimensions from the perspective of Islamic texts have not received sufficient scholarly attention. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the components of children’s playing in light of Qur’anic verses, narrations, and the lived practice (sīrah) of the Infallibles (PBH), and to elucidate the educational values that play realizes in the multidimensional development of the child’s personality.
Methodology:
This study employs a descriptive–analytical method. Relevant Qur’anic verses, narrations, and Hadiths pertaining to children’s play were collected, alongside an examination of the practical conduct of the Infallibles (PBH) in their interactions with children. These texts were then analyzed to extract educational components related to children’s playing and to classify them into major thematic categories, drawing where appropriate on selected educational and psychological concepts to interpret their implications.
Findings:
The findings indicate that a set of fundamental components related to children’s playing can be identified within Islamic texts. Specifically, six components were derived from Qur’anic verses, five from the sayings of the Infallibles (PBH), and twenty-one from their practical conduct, yielding a total of thirty-two components. These components highlight the importance of playing for all children, the necessity of a sincere and trustworthy supervisor, the moral integrity of playmates, the role of play in enhancing children’s intellect, and the importance of granting children freedom in play. Moreover, the practical conduct of the Infallibles underscores the initiative of adults in engaging in play with children and the provision of physical, creative, and intellectual games that contribute to the development of children’s diverse capacities.
Conclusion:
The study demonstrates that, in light of the Qur’an, narrations, and the conduct of the Infallibles (PBH), play is not merely a recreational activity but an effective educational tool that contributes to the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of children and reinforces religious and moral values. Identifying the components of playing and applying them within educational environments can assist parents and educators in utilizing the playing appropriately to foster balanced and comprehensive child development.
