Abstract

Reflection on the verses of the Holy Qur’an shows that the verses which point to the intelligence of natural phenomena—those that clearly speak of their prostration, glorification, obedience, and humility before God, the Exalted—should not be interpreted contrary to their apparent meaning. On the one hand, allowing the Holy Qur’an to speak for itself and paying due attention to the authority of the apparent meanings of its verses, and on the other hand, the absence of any sufficient reason to reject those apparent meanings, indicate that natural phenomena, like human beings, have accepted the lordship of God with intelligence and choice. They glorify Him, praise Him, and prostrate themselves before Him by will and choice; they are in dialogue with God, perfected through His guidance, and humble before Him. It is evident that this intelligence operates in a manner that most people are unable to comprehend. The dominance of this perspective in empirical studies will uncover new dimensions of reality and will lead to a different pattern of interaction with nature.
